Capital Campaign to Renovate St. Elizabeth House

What is St. Elizabeth House?

The historic building that is St. Elizabeth House was built in 1807 as the homestead for Henry Barnard and his family. The Sisters of Mercy purchased the building in 1983 in response to the need for housing and services to help homeless individuals in Hartford. Currently, St. Elizabeth House provides housing for over 160 homeless adults each year in 54 rooms. Another 5,000 adults and children will be served by The Friendship Center's Programs, which provide two meals a day, six days a week, as well as case management and access to health care.

The existence of St. Elizabeth House was not possible without significant renovations. The problems with the electrical system and access to a working elevator placed continued operations of this 32,000 square foot facility in peril. The efforts made to date, in addition to the remaining infrastructure and program space upgrades, will restore a building that has not had a significant face lift in 200 years and allow for services to continue.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we recently completed Phase III of our renovation. The first three phases included:

  • Phase I: A new elevator and upgrades to the electrical system
  • Phase II: Ramp and stairwell additions (interior and exterior) for full accessibility
  • Phase III: Energy efficient windows, exterior masonry repairs and radiator repairs

We need your support to continue the interior renovations of St. Elizabeth House:

  • Phase IV: Updated A/C system
  • Phase V: Reconfigure dining space
  • Phase VI: Upgrade resident, program and community spaces (walls, floors, lighting)
